Men burned 13 calories and women 11.6 on the lower end of the range whilst on the higher end men burned 306 Calories and women spent 164 Calories.

The research also showed how long the sexual act lasted and it came out that the average duration of the foreplay, intercourse to orgasm lasted 24.70 minutes and 12.5 to 36.9 minutes was the time the couples spent on the sex act.

It was not very clear how the fluctuations in the expending of Calories occurred and how higher Calories were burned in some and others less. It could be due to the intensity of their sex act.

This shows that if we want to expend more energy we should intensify our sex act or take our time a prolong it so that both together we burnt out more Calories.

Prof. Karelis went a bit further and compared the findings he had with the sex act with those on a treadmill for 30 minutes and here the men burnt between 149 and 390 Calories  and on the other hand women burnt between 120 and 381 calories.

This brought out another interesting finding where sex and 30 minutes on the treadmill burnt out the same amount of Calories, for which the participants concluded that sex was very much better than 30 minutes on the treadmill.

Hence the findings are showing that the 150 minutes of exercises that the HHS is recommending could be achieved by having sex once a week which would be more interesting than being on a treadmill or a gym visit.

Weight Loss comparison with exercise

There could be an issue where some might raise, that those taking part in research were young healthy individuals but that was not the case as there were men averaging between 19.5 and 31 in the Body Mass Index (BMI), whilst women were between, 16.9 and 26.6. This showed that whilst some were underweight some were overweight.

The weights of the participants during the 4 weeks they were in the research were not taken into account but it has to be understood that it is not only exercises that would push weight loss.
